1D pay tribute to fans after last live performance before hiatus

One Direction have reached out to their fans after performing live for the last time before going on a prolonged break.

The boyband returned to where it all began for them - the X Factor stage - on Sunday (December 13).

They ran through their recent tracks 'Infinity' and 'History' before a video montage of stars congratulating them was shown.

Speaking on Twitter after the performances, Harry Styles wrote:

"To you, you have changed our lives and no words will ever be good enough to thank you for what we have done together.

"You are the greatest team mates we have ever known. Thank you."

Bandmate Louis Tomlinson meanwhile said: "Well that was an emotional night!! Never can we thank you enough for how special you have made the last five years for us!

"I hope you realise what we have all done together really is incredible. You guys have made us what we are today! We'll be back soon enough!"

One Direction will be taking a break following the release of their fifth album 'Made in the A.M' in November.
