One Direction's Niall Horan explains handwriting on solo single artwork

One Direction star Niall Horan has explained to fans the origins of the handwriting on the artwork for his debut solo single.

The Irishman surprised fans on Thursday (September 29) by releasing his first solo single 'This Town'.

Its artwork pictures Horan standing in front of a series of handwritten notes.

Speaking on Twitter on Sunday night (October 2), the singer said the writing was taken from when the song was created.

He said: "The writing behind me on the single cover is actually my writing and original handwriting from the time I wrote the song.

"Random one for ya."

Horan signed a record deal with Universal - the rivals of the Simon Cowell-linked Sony.
