One Direction's Zayn Malik closes Twitter account after hate messages

One Direction star Zayn Malik has taken a stand against Twitter trolls and closed his account.

The singing star, who had over five million followers, shut down his account yesterday (August 21) after having enough of the abuse directed towards him.

Malik has been relatively inactive on Twitter recently compared to some of his bandmates but he tweeted that it was because of the "useless opinions" and "hate" he endures.

The 'Up All Night' star asked fans to interact with him on the band's official account instead as he shut down his personal one. He tweeted:

"The reason i don't tweet as much as i use to, is because I'm sick of all the useless opinions and hate that i get daily goodbye twitter :) My fans that have something nice to say can tweet me on the one direction account , :) x."

The phrase "#comebackzayn" soon began to trend on Twitter as disappointed fans tried to show their support for the beleaguered singer.
