One Direction t-shirts are the best selling at HMV.

The boyband enjoyed a massively successful 2012 as they trawled the globe on sold out tours and released second album 'Take Me Home'.

It seems their popularity has translated into merchandise too, with entertainment retailer HMV confirming their t-shirts are their top selling.

Another strand of music merchandise that is extremely popular in HMV is classic rock and metal, with Black Sabbath the best selling in that category.

Led Zeppelin t-shirts are also very popular as people lap up throwbacks to a bygone era. HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said:

"Some performers can quickly come and go with the trends, but one genre that has an enduring appeal and seems to remain eternally popular with fans is classic rock and metal."

He continued: "Along with the baby boomers who grew up with their music, a new generation of fans are increasingly into them as well, in part out of a recognition that many of the featured T-shirt images now rank as design classics that not only look great but have a real authenticity about them."
