Mick Hucknall slams One Direction critics

British singer-songwriter Mick Hucknall has slammed music "snobs" who criticise One Direction, claiming the boy band are as talented as The Beatles.

The five piece - comprising Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson - have risen to international stardom thanks to their catchy tunes and cheeky charm.

However, they have come under fire for not writing all of their own songs - something Simply Red singer Hucknall finds unfair.

Speaking to British newspaper The Daily Mirror, he revealed: "I rather like One Direction, I think they're good. People can be snobby and say they don't write their own songs, but it's the pop industry. When the Beatles first started they were a boyband and then, through their writing, they merged into something else. So who knows what's going to happen for One Direction."

The heartthrobs were recently transformed into Pez-head candy dispensers to help raise money for Comic Relief. The stars have been heavily involved in raising funds for the charity this year, recording single 'One Way Or Another (Teenage Kicks)' to raise awareness.
