One Direction battle Avicii for the UK's No.1 single

The midweek chart update has just been announced (July 24) and it shows that One Direction are going head to head with dance master Avicii, who has beaten them to No.1 with his track 'Wake Me Up'.

The boyband's record-breaking 'Best Song Ever' has debuted just behind at No.2, but the Official Charts Company has revealed that it will be incredibly tough for the heartthrobs to overtake as they're currently 26,000 copies behind Avicii.

If One Direction don't manage to land what would be their fourth UK No.1 single, the lads will at least be able to celebrate recently smashing VEVO's 24 hour record after the song's music video managed an impressive 12.3 million views in just one day.

Toploader's well-loved 'Dancing In The Moonlight' has re-entered the UK Top 40 this afternoon at No.38, Nina Nesbitt has made an appearance at 39 with 'Way In The World', and Avril Lavigne's 'Here's To Never Growing Up' has dropped a sizeable 18 positions to No.32.
