One Direction's 'Midnight Memories' becomes UK's best selling album of 2013

One Direction have claimed the UK's best selling album of the year title at the last minute.

The boyband released their third effort 'Midnight Memories' on November 25 and it has now sold 700,000 copies in the country.

That means that it has usurped Emeli Sandé's 2012 record 'Our Version of Events' in the top selling list.

That album has shifted 683,000 units this year, meaning that it has now sold 2.07 million copies overall.

Commenting on the news, Liam Payne said: "This tops an amazing year for us! We're so excited to have the biggest selling album in the UK this year, especially with a record we are all so proud of. We'd like to thank everyone who has bought the album, it really means a lot to us."

Official Charts Company chief Martin Talbot meanwhile commented: "Hearty congratulations should go to One Direction. It is a huge honour to become the biggest seller of any year. To do so in such a short amount of time is a very impressive achievement."
