Pharrell Williams on finding his sound: 'If I rapped like Jay Z, I would sound braggy'

Superstar Pharrell Williams has revealed that it takes a lot to be unique in the music industry, but it's so important to be yourself and to create the sounds that truly represent who you are.

Speaking to Germany's GQ magazine, the superstar admitted that he worked hard to find his own sound rather than just trying to fit in with his contemporaries because what works for one artist doesn't always work for another:

"I think you have to create something new. You can't just copy the style of others. If I would sing Jay Z's lyrics, I would sound braggy, while he inspires people with his songs. Everybody has to find their own style."

The 'Happy' sensation went onto add that his goal was always to expose his music to as many ears as possible because he wants to feel as though he is 'part of something bigger':

"For me, it's not all about me or to be a star with a certain image. It's about being a part of something bigger and you can't control that. It does not matter how talented you are - if nobody reacts to your product you are just a guy with a demo tape or a few design drafts... I want to connect people. Success means being supported by others. I just try to find my purpose as a part of the big mosaic the universe arranged."
