Queen guitarist Brian May praises "extraordinary" Adam Lambert in fan club letter

Queen guitarist Brian May has heaped praise on Adam Lambert after he fronted the band for a number of shows this summer.

The 'Trespassing' singer joined the classic British rock group for some European dates in June and July, with three gigs at London's Hammersmith Apollo.

Lambert had previously performed with the band at the MTV EMAs in 2011 but this was the first time he has toured with Queen.

Speaking in a letter issued to fan club members, Brian May said that it was "amazing" to perform with Lambert and that, like Freddie Mercury, he is a very "spatially connected" singer.

May added that the shows felt like Queen gigs of old - "interactive and fun" - and that Lambert's voice is "extraordinary".

Queen's seminal song 'Bohemian Rhapsody' has been named Britain's favourite No.1.

The news was announced on ITV show The Nation's Favourite Number One last night (July 15), which collated the results of a public poll.

Voters were asked to select their favourite tracks from a shortlist of songs that have hit No.1 in Britain.

Following Queen in second place was Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean', whilst Adele's 'Someone Like You' was voted No.3.

Elsewhere in the list, the Oasis track 'Don't Look Back in Anger' landed at No.4 whilst 'Hey Jude' by the Beatles rounded off the top five.

Queen’s Brian May has today admitted that he’d rather be remembered for his work with animals than his music.

The legendary guitarist, who last night teamed up with Adam Lambert again for Queen’s first ever live performance in Poland, told the Sunday Times that he would love his wildlife preservation work to be his lasting legacy:

"I suppose I've lived a crazy life, and watching wildlife brings back a sense of tranquillity.

"When I'm gone, people will no doubt remember me for Queen, but I would much rather be remembered for attempting to change the way we treat our fellow creatures".

The 64-year-old, who has turned the grounds of his Surrey estate into an animal sanctuary, went on to add that he’s always had interests outside his rock career:

"[The band] is a huge part of my life, but I do have other interests. People know about the astrophysics, but I love gardening, too, and I've always been passionate about the welfare of our wonderful British wildlife."

Queen's Brian May "mesmerised" by Adam Lambert at Ukraine show

Queen guitarist Brian May has revealed that he was so taken aback by Adam Lambert's performance with the band in Ukraine last night (July 1) that he forgot how to play.

Lambert joined the classic rockers at a special gig in Kiev to promote the fight against AIDS, with Sir Elton John also performing.

The band played through a number of legendary songs such as 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Under Pressure' as Adam Lambert gave Queen a 2012 twist.

Brian May later took to his official website to praise the singer and thank fans for attending the show. He said:

"Well, we did one! A show! And...well, it is out there in cyberspace already, spinning around the world. For a first show, I think, with all its train wrecks, it was a good first outing...I was at times quite mesmerised by what Adam was doing and sometimes forgot to play!! Ha ha."

He concluded: "Thanks to all the great folks who stood and rocked for many hours in Kiev's Freedom Square...you guys are the best."

Freddie Mercury to appear as optical illusion in Queen musical

Queen’s Brian May has revealed that Freddie Mercury will appear as an ‘optical illusion’ during a special performance of hit musical 'We Will Rock You.'

The legendary guitarist, whose band recently announced a new show with temporary frontman Adam Lambert, told the BBC that “people will come out saying, 'did we actually see Freddie?'" when the spectacle takes place at London’s Dominion Theatre on May 14.

The 64-year-old refused to describe the stunt as a ‘hologram’ but went onto express his disappointment that Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre had used a similar tactic to bring Tupac Shakur back to life during their set at Coachella last month:

"It's a little unfortunate they did that thing with Tupac as we've been trying to make Freddie appear on the stage for quite a while.

“[That technique] is something we've looked at ourselves but I think probably for a show that runs eight shows a week it's not really quite practical."

The drummer admitted that himself and Brian May aren't wanting to line up too many things because of their increasing age. He added:

Queen confirm two London shows with Adam Lambert

Queen have officially confirmed that they will play two gigs in London this summer with Adam Lambert.

Drummer Roger Taylor had previously gone on record to unveil their plans to play twice at London's HMV Hammersmith Apollo to make up for the cancellation of Knebworth's Sonisphere Festival, which they were due to headline.

They have now confirmed they will play the venue on July 11 and July 12, with a presale available to Queen fanclub members and also to Sonisphere ticket holders.

A statement reads:

"Queen acted immediately in looking for an alternative venue in an aim to avoid disappointing all those fans who had so desperately looked forward to seeing them at Knebworth. Coming in the lead into the Olympics, most of the venues they first approached were unavailable, being taken as official London Games 2012 venues. As the setting of some of the band's best remembered concerts, the idea of returning to this historic Hammersmith venue really appealed to them."

Roger Taylor added: "We had made up our minds to play in the UK this year, so play we will! Following the collapse of the Sonisphere organisation we didn't want to let down all those people expecting to see us live!"

Adam Lambert meanwhile said: "I'm so thrilled that Queen found a way to ensure that the fans will get to see this event this summer. I can't wait to be in London to perform with Queen for these incredibly special shows!"

General sale for the gigs will begin at 9am on Wednesday April 18, with the presale running 24 hours prior.

They had already penned two dates in June and July - one in Moscow and one at the Sonisphere Festival at Knebworth - but the latter was dropped after the festival was recently cancelled.

However, Taylor told Billboard that they are set to play two dates in July at London's Hammersmith Apollo as an "alternative for some of the people who had bought tickets" for Sonisphere - and they also are planning a show with Elton John in Kiev. Taylor said:

"We're really excited about it. Adam...of course he has this unbelievable range, like Freddie (Mercury) had range. Adam can really cover it. He's an extraordinary singer and a real talent. I feel he fits into our sort of theatricality."

Taylor also hinted that he and bandmate Brian May have been asked to take part in an Olympic event later this year, but he said: "I don't think we're meant to say too much about it yet."

Queen and Adam Lambert looking into other venues after Sonisphere cancellation

Queen have confirmed that they are looking into other venues after this year's UK Sonisphere Festival was cancelled.

The Knebworth event was due to take place in July and Queen were due to headline one of the nights with American Idol singer Adam Lambert on vocals.

However, the festival's organisers confirmed today (March 29) that they are pulling the event due to because they would be "unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere's audience would rightly expect."

In a statement released on Queen's official website, Brian May and Roger Taylor confirmed that they were looking into another venue to ensure they still perform. They said:

"We are disappointed to hear of the cancellation of the Sonisphere Festivals as we were very much looking forward to performing with Adam Lambert and particularly as the venue was Knebworth, our last stand with Freddie. We apologise for the disappointment to all those who were looking forward to seeing us. We are working to see if we can redress the situation at some other venue."

Brian May blasts 'Don't Stop Me Now' talent show

Queen guitarist Brian May has blasted Sky1’s new talent series, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now,’ describing it as 'cheap' and 'humiliating.'

Named after the band’s 1978 hit, the Amanda Byram-hosted show, which kicked off on Sunday night, sees wannabe pop stars who fail to impress the judging panel get ejected from the stage via embarrassing methods including horizontal bungees and trap doors.

But the 64-year-old, who along with Roger Taylor and the remaining finalists, appeared on The X-Factor to perform ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ in 2009, was keen to voice his disapproval of the concept:

"Of course with this title people are going to think it's something to do with us, Queen. But it's not. It sure looks like just another cheap way to humiliate people.

"If you ever see me sitting on a panel acting like I think I'm God Almighty and making demeaning remarks about fellow musicians, you have my permission to shoot me. With a rubber tommy water gun."

The legendary musician, currently in the charts with Dappy collaboration, ‘Rockstar,’ will join the rest of his Queen band-mates and guest vocalist Adam Lambert for a special performance at the Sonisphere Festival in July.
