‘Freedom’: The Definitive Anti-Trump Protest Song From Beldon Haigh

‘Freedom’ is the new protest single from Scottish singer-songwriter Beldon Haigh, who is joining the anti-Trump camp along with his powerful and inspiring ballad.

Having been a prolific singer-songwriter in the 80s with bands like Mikifin and Boxing Clever, Beldon Haigh has since developed his craft as a musician, taking 18 months to write and record his new solo album, from which the anti-Trump protest song ‘Freedom’ is taken.

Despite the long time period dedicated to perfecting his work, the idea for ‘Freedom’ came to Beldon in a dream and so after waking, he penned the song in just twenty minutes. He began to record the track at his home studio in Falkirk and then voyaged further afield to work with other talented musicians, recording the piano and strings in New York and mastering the album in Los Angeles with the help of Stefano Bonzi.

Beldon’s affinity for writing ballads and protest songs is demonstrated through his quality musicianship and clever storytelling, employing touches of humour along with substantial lyricism that always has a purpose. As well as this, Beldon favours true musicality, utilising real musicians and real instruments to create his contemporary style of melodic pop-rock.

With influences such as Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Al Stewart, Cat Stevens, Lou Reed and pop acts like Elbow, Tears For Fears, Del Amitri, and The Waterboys, Beldon has a strong inspirational pedigree that becomes evident upon listening to his powerful and emotional song writing.

The context behind Haigh’s protest song ‘Freedom’ is even more important to him considering his family background. Beldon’s wife is a Honduran immigrant with family in the US who are under threat of deportation from Trump’s policies and he is also a father of three children, one of whom is mixed race. In addition, Beldon’s mother was a pioneer for the Women’s Ministry and was the first ever Scottish female priest in the Episcopalian church – as such, he was raised with an acute appreciation of feminism and women’s rights.

Trying to send out his own message, Beldon is protesting for freedom, simultaneously asking, ‘What does the word even mean?’
