Elsiane explore the difficulties of the music industry in ‘Death Of The Artist’

“... an experimental masterpiece...impossible to pin down to a single genre and with the potential to appeal to fans of many” – Sputnick Music

Alternative group Elsiane return with ‘Death Of The Artist’, to be released April 21st, after performing in Cirque Du Soleil and collaborating with Olivier Deufour on Quebec City’s 400th Anniversary celebration. The album touches upon how the music industry has been responsible for killing artistic talent, forcing individuals to conform to the mainstream, something Elsiane knows all too well after being signed to a major label. Elsiane refused to change their sound, leading to them recording and releasing ‘Death Of The Artist’ independently.

Telling the story of all the passages Elsiane went through as artists; ‘Death Of The Artist’ takes the listener on a musical journey, touching upon the death and rebirth of the artist and the struggle to survive on this difficult past. The soul-searching album is a melting pot of different styles, from orchestral, downtempo and electronic, drawing comparison to Massive Attack, Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel.

The Montreal duo aren’t your typical band, with polar opposite musical and cultural backgrounds. Singer/composer/musician Elsieanna Caplette met drummer Stephane Sotto in 2000 in Montreal but even though Sotto has a self taught, instinctive nature and Caplette has more of a classically trained background, the duo hit it off immediately, forming Elsiane. The 2007 debut album ‘Hybrid’ established them as the hottest new act in Canada, with ecstatically received follow up tours and festival appearances. They then released ‘Mechanics of Emotion’ and between then and the group’s breathtaking new album ‘Death Of The Artist’, Caplette and partner Sotto, exhausted by the effort of creation, separated as a couple and teetered on the brink of parting as artist. However in this period of soul searching and near despair, the couple reformed and demonstrated how strong Elsiane are.
