Pay-back time for Music Makers: Salute sings to unsigned artists about shared revenue scheme

Salute Music Makers announces the world’s first and only shared revenue scheme for unsigned artists

Salute, the revolutionary ‘Music Makers’ competition is setting itself apart from the crowd and confirming their alternative status by introducing a shared revenue scheme for all contestants who enter, literally putting its money where its mouth is. Up until now, nothing like this has ever been done when it comes to searching for the next Adele, Ed Sheeran, Skepta or Arctic Monkeys.

Salute recognises that being an unsigned artist is always an uphill struggle. Having your music played on platforms such as SoundCloud, Youtube or Spotify simply won’t get you paid. Songwriters are the genius types that provide the vehicle for artists and yet they're the last to be paid in the current value chain; Salute’s mission is to change this. New advances in the digital industry have done little, if anything, to help. By announcing their shared revenue scheme, the Salute competition aims to benefit Music Makers, simultaneously shaking up the industry in the process.

Feargal Sharkey, the face of Salute, commented “Songwriters provide and always have provided the heartbeat for any piece of music. And yet songwriters are often, and justifiably, very vocal about how they are treated by online companies - lack of transparency, confusing payments systems and lack of respect. Today that changes. It’s time that unsigned songwriters get what they deserve, payment”.

By offering the shared revenue scheme to its contestants, Salute is not only pioneering the search for the most innovative and diverse makers of new and original music, but unlike other music competitions, it is also supporting the Music Makers at the same time. Consequently, 5% of all advertising and sponsorship net revenue will be placed into a fund to be shared between the Music Makers at the end of the competition.

Salute will then take the monthly total of the number of songs viewed on the platform and divide that into the monthly Music Maker fund, which creates a viewing rate for a single view/listen. Multiplying the monthly viewing rate by the number of times each Music Maker’s song has been viewed, gives the revenue each contestant would make from submitting their music.

Although contestants must pay £20 for each song they enter, thanks to the revenue scheme, Salute hopes that entrants will at least get back the money they paid. Salute are proud to say that this has never been done before in any competition of this kind, providing a platform for discovering and nurturing British music makers from every walk of life and celebrating the true diversity of musical talent.

Indie-folk artist Navina, who performed at Salute’s announcement event, enthused: "I think it's amazing that Salute are giving artists a share of the revenue. Where big companies are hardly paying indie artists for using their platform, which makes it impossible to earn anything decent from royalties, I think it just shows the nature of the Salute competition. They are genuinely interested in helping people that are talented and make good music".
