Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis: 'I love being sober'

Red Hot Chili Peppers' frontman, Anthony Kiedis, was recently hospitalised with stomach flu causing the band to cancel two US concerts.

Some of his friends thought that he had a drug relapse. Speaking to Sunday Night, an Australian TV show, he said:

"I got a lot of messages in the mail; it just seemed like people did care. My friends called, people I hadn't spoken to for years called, but what people assume or think about using (drugs), I could care less. It didn't faze me at all.

"I happen to love being sober, I also loved being wasted at times. Being sober for me is a pleasure, I get a lot of joy out of it; it works for me. I get to surf, I get to hang out with my son, I get to play music, I get to be OK."

Kiedis spoke about what happened just before he got taken to hospital. He revealed:

"This was knocking me off my feet, and I was white as a ghost, and my whole gut section just seized up, and I was kind of falling to my knees in pain, so I got taken by a friend to the hospital from the gig."

The two concerts were cancelled with the following statement:

"Due to Anthony Kiedis' hospitalization from complications from the intestinal flu on Saturday evening, the Red Hot Chili Peppers regretfully must postpone their upcoming concert for iHeart Radio on May 17th.

"They would like to extend their gratitude to the fans for the outpouring of well wishes. Anthony is expected to make a full recovery soon.”

The first concert was cancelled just before the band were due to jump on stage at Irvin Meadows Amphiteatre in California. Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist, Flea, told the audience:

"Anthony is on his way to the hospital right now and we're unable to play this evening.”
