Rihanna leapfrogs One Direction in UK singles chart

The battle at the top of the UK singles chart has taken a twist after it was revealed that Rihanna has overtaken One Direction.

Both acts released their highly anticipated new singles on the same day (September 30), with the Bajan beauty unveiling 'Diamonds' and the British boyband releasing 'Live While We're Young'.

On Wednesday (October 3), One Direction were less than 250 copies ahead of 'Diamonds', with their position at the top of the chart looking less than secure.

Data released today (October 5) shows that Rihanna is now around 5,000 units ahead of the former X Factor contestants.

If the singer maintains her place at the top of the pile until the official chart is released on Sunday (October 7), 'Diamonds' will be Rihanna's sixth UK No.1 single.
