Sam Smith: 'Sir Bob called about Band Aid from a private number and I almost didn't pick up'

British singer-songwriter Sam Smith has revealed that his involvement in the recording of Band Aid 30's new rendition of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' almost didn't happen because Sir Bob Geldof called him from a withheld number and he never picks up when that happens.

During a new interview with Alan Carr on his 'Chatty Man' television show, the 'Stay With Me' superstar confessed that he doesn't like to answer private numbers when they call his phone so he almost missed the opportunity:

"I don't pick up to unknown numbers so when Geldof rang I had no idea it was him. When he called I gave my phone to a band member and then he realised Bob was on the other end and gave it back to me. He's a lovely guy. It's a legendary thing to do but I was glad to help. I thought there would be an ego fight but Bono was amazing and Chris Martin was great to meet."

The hitmaker's full interview with Carr (pictured above left) is due to air later tonight (November 21) in the UK on Channel 4 at 10pm.
