Sam Smith: 'My music is a diary'

Vocal powerhouse Sam Smith has revealed that he finds inspiration for his music in his life and likes to write about things from experience as it adds a sense of authenticity to his material.

The star, who picked up the Favourite Male Pop/Rock Artist prize at the 2014 American Music Awards on the weekend, explained that he writes about his own personal life and uses his songs as a kind of public melodic journal.

Talking about his debut album, 'In The Lonely Hour', and the tracks that feature on it, he confessed: "My life inspires my music. I write in a very raw way; my music is a diary, I've been willing to give myself away and show everyone my flaws and ups and downs of my life through my music."

The 'Stay With Me' hitmaker recently told Teen Vogue magazine that he has one lofty ambition that he wants to achieve while he's famous and that is meeting the Queen: “I'd love to meet the Queen. I don't want an award - I literally want to shake her hand.”
