Sam Smith: 'I didn't want people to think I came out to sell records so I did it before my album release'

Singer Sam Smith has revealed that he was wary of coming out as a gay man because he didn't want people to think he did it in order to sell more records.

The superstar confessed to Ellen DeGeneres that he felt it was important to come out before the release of debut album, 'In The Lonely Hour', so that people didn't think he was using that to maximise publicity:

"I wanted to do it before because if I did it afterwards, people probably would have thought I was lying just to sell records."

Following his interview on 'The Ellen Show', the 'Stay With Me' hitmaker took to his official Twitter page and told his fans that it was a pleasure to have been interviewed by DeGeneres: "Had the most amazing day on @TheEllenShow she’s such a kind amazing lady. Watch it today!"

Last week, Smith posted a message on his social media pages and admitted that he's feeling inspired and has a lot of ideas for his second studio album: "Already have so many ideas flowing through my mind for album 2. Brace yourselves...When you think it couldn't get more honest..."
