Sam Smith: 'Heartbreak was partly self-inflicted as I needed to write more music'

'Stay With Me' hitmaker Sam Smith has revealed that while his heart was broken by the guy who inspired his amazing debut album, 'In The Lonely Hour', he thinks the pain was somewhat self-inflicted because he knew the emotions would make for great songwriting material.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe recently, the GRAMMY-nominated star confessed that perhaps he 'forced' himself to feel more for the situation than he would have if he didn't have an album to write for his record label:

"It was desperately sad to think of, but it was such a healing process for me, you know? I think I actually looking back on it, the person I was in love with, I think I forced myself a little bit to be more in love with them in order to write more music."

"'Cause my label were like, 'We need an album.' So I was like, 'Right, let's go for dinner.' Break my heart. So I think, kind of, it was a bit self-inflicted maybe. A tiny bit. When I look back on it."
