MTV names Sam Smith 2014's Artist of the Year

'Lay Me Down' superstar Sam Smith has topped MTV's Best Artists of 2014 list, beating the likes of Beyoncé and Ariana Grande to the impressive No.1 spot.

MTV issued a statement about the decision to give the title to the vocal sensation and explained:

"The tear-stained agony of a love unrequited on 'Stay With Me' captured the imagination of heartbroken Americans like it was the second coming of Adele's 'Someone Like You'. Still, the most remarkable part of that success might be that this relatable message was communicated by a gay man."

Beyoncé came in second place, 'Blank Space' songstress Taylor Swift is at No.3, rapper Iggy Azalea finished fourth, and 'Problem' sensation Ariana Grande is at No.5 on the list compiled by the popular music network.

Smith, meanwhile, was recently nominated for a phenomenal 6 GRAMMY Awards and he is up for Best Pop Vocal Album for his 'In The Lonely Hour', Best Pop Solo Performance, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year.
