Sam Smith first artist to sell one million albums in UK and US this year

Sam Smith has become the first musician to shift one million albums in both the US and the UK in 2014.

The Brit recently passed the massive milestone in America with his debut 'In The Lonely Hour'.

It has today (December 18) been confirmed that the record has now sold over a million in his native UK too.

This means that Smith is the only artist in the world this year to sell over one million albums in the US and the UK.

He commented to the Official Charts Company: "OFFICIALLY sold 1 MILLION copies of 'In The Lonely Hour'! To say I am ecstatic is a huge understatement. Thank you so much to every single person who has purchased my album."

'In The Lonely Hour' is the second album to achieve one million sales in the UK in 2014, with Ed Sheeran's 'x' getting there first.

It is the first year since 2011 that two records have sold one million units in the UK in the same year.
