Sam Smith on gay rights: 'They're so far from where they should be'

'Stay With Me' sensation Sam Smith has opened up about gay rights in a Twitter post and confessed that there is still such a long way to go where equality is concerned.

He took to the social networking site and shared a message with his 1.71 million followers that reads: "Gay rights are still so far from where they should be. So far. Do something. I am. I will."

The star, meanwhile, is due to perform at the GRAMMYs later this week (February 8), but confessed last night that he has lost his voice and even had to cancel a concert.

Smith is nominated for a total of 6 prizes, including Best Pop Vocal Album for his 'In The Lonely Hour', Best Pop Solo Performance, Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. The GRAMMYs will take place on Sunday at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
