Sam Smith: 'I want to be a spokesperson for the gay community and I hope I've shown that'

British singer-songwriter Sam Smith has revealed that despite what previous news articles have suggested, he really does want to use his voice to support the gay community.

Speaking to MTV News at the GRAMMYs over the weekend, the sensation admitted that his new music video for 'Lay Me Down' shows that fact: "A lot of people have said before that I don’t want to be a spokesperson for the gay community, and that’s very false. Hopefully, I showed that when I put out [the 'Lay Me Down' video]."

Referring to the video specifically and the themes it deals with, Smith added: "That video is my future, you know? That’s what I want to do. I want to get married, and — well, I don’t want my husband to die. I want to get married, and it was important for me to make a statement."

Last year, Smith told Digital Spy that being famous automatically makes you into a role model and he was uncomfortable with that immediate assumption: "I'm not trying to be a spokesperson. It sounds awful of me, but I'm really just trying to live my life and write music about it. That's what I do. I'm not trying to heal the world. From a young age I've always been like this, so it's been normal. My family and friends have made it feel normal and I'm not going to stop that now."
