Sam Smith returns to No. 1 on UK albums chart

Sam Smith has once again regained the top spot on the UK chart with his debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’.

In the first ever album chart to include streaming data, the British vocal star has emerged triumphant after a battle with Led Zeppelin, Ed Sheeran and Royal Blood for the No. 1 title.

‘In The Lonely Hour’ won out after finishing the week with 41,000 in sales stats, with Ed Sheeran up one to No. 2 but having to settle for second place with a 38,000 sales total for ‘X’.

Royal Blood’s self-titled debut has shot up from No. 18 to No. 3 thanks to a sales total of 27,000 this week.

At No. 4 is George Ezra with ‘Wanted On Voyage’, which is up two and shifted 22,000 units this week.

Completing the Top Five is ‘1989’ by Taylor Swift. The American star opened the BRIT awards with a performance of ‘Blank Space’ and has finished the week with 15,000 in sales.

Led Zeppelin’s re-issue of ‘Physical Graffiti’ is this week’s highest new entry by debuting at No. 6 after racking up a 14,000 sales tally.

Other new entries to this week’s album chart come from Chris Brown and Tyga with ‘Fan Of A Fan The Album’ at No. 7, ‘The Race For Space’ by Public Service Broadcasting at No. 11, Black Star Riders’ ‘Killer Instinct’ at No. 13, Big Sean at No. 23 with ‘Dark Sky Paradise’, ‘Return To Forever’ from Scorpions at No. 31, ‘Hotel California’ by The Eagles’ back at No. 39.

This week’s biggest climber is Paloma Faith’s ‘A Perfect Contradiction’ which has risen from No. 33 to No. 8. Demand for the album increased 12 times over after Faith's award win and performance at the BRITs.

From this week on, the Official Albums Chart is ranked by combined chart sales, made up by physical sales, download sales and an album streams for each album. Streaming data is created by taking the track streams from each album and converting them to albums at a rate of 1000:1.
