Sam Smith talks receiving physical and verbal homophobic abuse

Sam Smith has opened up on the abuse he has received for being gay.

The singer told The Sun that he came out aged 11 to those close to him.

However, the chart-topping Brit said that he has been on the receiving end of physical and verbal abuse as a result of his sexuality.

Smith said: "When I moved to London I got punched in the neck walking back from work. It was definitely homophobic.

"I was on the phone speaking quite loudly and had pink earphones on so it was pretty clear I was gay."

He added: "A bunch of boys from a rival school would shout insults at me as I walked from my home to the train station.

"I remember walking to the station getting 'f*****' shouted at me all the time."

Smith meanwhile has teamed up with John Legend to release a new version of 'Lay Me Down' to raise funds for this year's Comic Relief efforts.
