Sam Smith: 'People only began to properly listen to me when I started being myself'

Sam Smith has promised that he will be open and honest on his next album.

The singer shot to fame last year with his 2014 debut album 'In The Lonely Hour'.

The heartbreak album struck a chord with many, but speaking at gig at London's Brixton O2 Academy on Wednesday (March 25), Smith said that he initially struggled to be heard.

The Brit reportedly said: "I had a very broad idea of things I needed to do to become well known. And I thought that if I lost loads of weight then people would listen, but the truth was people only started to properly listen to me when I started being myself.

"And the way for me to do that through music was to be honest. This album is my diary, I've hidden nothing from anyone and I won't hide anything from anyone on my future record, my future songs."

'In The Lonely Hour' features the hit singles 'Stay With Me' and 'I'm Not The Only One'.
