Sam Smith album spends almost one year in UK chart top five

Sam Smith has joined the Beatles in achieving a landmark UK chart feat.

The singer's first album 'In The Lonely Hour' was released a year ago.

The Official Charts Company confirmed today (May 29) that the record has spent 50 weeks in the UK albums chart top five.

Only The Beatles and their 1963 effort 'Please Please Me' have achieved the milestone with a debut album, with the record spending 51 weeks in the top five.

Smith commented: "Seeing this statistic genuinely makes me feel very weird, but also insanely happy and just so thankful to everyone who has purchased the album. Not so lonely anymore!"

The only album to beat the 51 week mark is Simon & Garfunkel’s 'Bridge Over Troubled Water', which managed a full 52 weeks in 1970.
