Simon Cowell says One Direction's year-long break is 'healthy'

Simon Cowell believes One Direction's forthcoming break will be beneficial to them.

The band recently confirmed reports that they will be taking time out in 2016.

The Sun, who broke the story, suggested that the pop group will be out of action for at least a year.

Speaking to media at a launch of this year's X Factor, label boss Cowell said that he thinks One Direction will prosper from a break.

He said: "Look, even though they're young, that is a gruelling schedule.

"After a while I could see they were exhausted, so when they said, 'How do you feel about it?' I said, 'Do whatever you want'.

"Having a year off is going to be a healthy thing."
