Simon Cowell says Zayn Malik leaving 1D didn't affect album

Simon Cowell says Zayn Malik's departure from One Direction earlier this year had no impact on the band's new album.

The group are due to release their fifth record 'Made in the A.M.' on November 13.

Malik left the popsters in the spring to focus on living a more normal life and he had no involvement on the album.

Speaking to Access Hollywood, Cowell - who owns One Direction's label Syco - denied Malik leaving adversely affected writing and recording.

He said: "Did it make any difference to the record?

"None whatsoever. I knew there was an issue. I knew he wasn’t particularly happy. I think he should have stuck it out."

One Direction, however, are due to take a prolonged break in 2016.

The band are due to focus on individual endeavours and they will not tour 'Made in the A.M.'.

Malik meanwhile is expected to release debut solo music soon after penning a deal with RCA.
