Simon Cowell believes Miley Cyrus would be a "dream" judge on the X Factor USA.

The music mogul currently sits on the show's panel alongside Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio, but he recently opened up to Mashable about his ideal line-up.

He picked his previous American Idol colleagues Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul and also hinted that Cyrus could be a good addition to the line-up.

Cowell said: "I would pick Paula and Randy from American Idol - they were my favourite judges because we had an incredible time together. It was never planned to be what it became, and it was really special."

He added: "I recently met Miley Cyrus, and I really liked her. She has an opinion for sure."

This year's X Factor USA series has suffered poor ratings and Cowell admitted that he is thinking of reducing the number of live shows in an effort to freshen up next year's show.

He said: "It might just be on one night a week. It could work well. [Two nights] is probably too much."
