NJ Taylor, the driven Montreal pop/rnb singer/songwriter has a new single “Pop Army”, and slick new video to be pushed in the UK and Canada. Her pop army is increasing by the day. NJ Taylor’s new single, “Pop Army”, which has been compared to Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation”, is the perfect follow-up to her single “So You” which racked up 130,000 collective views on YouTube for its lyric and music videos and placed in numerous songwriting competitions.

The new single, “Pop Army”, is from NJ’s self-titled debut EP. The track has also been remixed by top charting UK DJ Cutmore, and also by the well-known Mexican DJ J Zuart, which will be out this spring along with an acoustic version.

The upbeat pop/dance track, co-written with Los Angeles-based Adien Lewis, is an homage to all the pop greats, especially Michael Jackson, Madonna and ABBA, NJ’s biggest inspirations. The video, which premiered on Musique Plus this week was directed by NOMAD and draws from elements of Lady Gaga, Madonna and MJ in terms of dance and costumes and concept, NJ says. 

“This is a reflection of our generations / Hypnotic beats get us lost in the rhyme…It will never let you down / It will always be around…Come join the pop army,” she sings.

“The song started with the title, pop army”, says NJ. “I always thought it sounded really cool and wanted to write a song called that. I spoke with my cowriter, Adien, about the idea and he was on the same page. We would write a song as an homage to all the big pop figures that led to what pop is today — Michael Jackson, Madonna, ABBA.”

“We were extremely inspired by those three main artists, so we wanted to have a song that brought a little bit of that funkiness. At the same time, I was really inspired by Katy Perry, Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.”

At a workshop in Toronto, songwriter Rob Wells (Justin Bieber, Backstreet Boys) critiqued the demo. “He had the best comments,” NJ says. “He compared it to Janet Jackson’s ‘Rhythm Nation’. He gave me clues how to make the song better, which we applied and that’s what you hear today.”

The EP was co-produced with Ghislain “Gee” Brind’Amour (Rihanna, Karl Wolf, Victoria Duffield), arranged by Shahe Sinanoglu (Karl Wolf), and mastered by Gene Grimaldi (Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Carly Rae Jepsen, Nicki Minaj). An acoustic version of the EP will be out April 2016.
