Sony/ATV wins Publisher of the Year at ASCAP Pop Awards

Sony/ATV Music Publishing won Pop Publisher of the Year at the 34th annual ASCAP Pop Music Awards held Thursday evening (May 18) at The Wiltern in Los Angeles.

Attached and below is the acceptance speech delivered at the event by Sony/ATV Music Publishing Chairman and CEO Martin Bandier.

"Thank you.

I’d like to begin by saying that this has been a great night for all of us at Sony/ATV, but most of all, it’s been a great night for our songwriters. The competition gets tougher every year, which makes it even more special to win an award like Publisher of the Year. Having 22 winning songs tonight and 17 last week at the BMI Awards means that both we and our songwriters are doing something right.

I want to congratulate our songwriters for their awards tonight, and to thank them for everything they do. Their talent and creativity never ceases to amaze me and I know we are blessed at Sony/ATV with having the best songwriters in the business.

I also want to thank all of our dedicated staff, both those who are here this evening and those who work for us around the world and whose commitment ensures that we remain the No. 1 music publisher.

And thank you to Beth, Paul, John and everyone at ASCAP for all their work throughout the year and for putting together tonight’s event. It’s a pretty great time for the music industry right now with streaming driving up revenues, but it doesn’t need me to tell you that songwriters are not yet getting the full benefits of this growth. We still have more work to do with legislative and regulatory changes to ensure that you the songwriters are fairly compensated by streaming services whose businesses wouldn’t exist without your songs.

It means that nights like these become even more important so we can remind everyone that behind every hit song and every successful recording artist there are the songwriters. Last week alone 95 of the songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart were co-written by songwriters who were not the recording artist. Too often your contribution is overlooked or even forgotten, but without your words and music we know there would be no hits, no recording artists and no music industry.

So here’s to the songwriters. You have not been forgotten here tonight and at Sony/ATV you continue to be our No. 1 priority. We will do everything we can to make sure that everybody else appreciates what you do and that you are properly compensated and recognized for your work."

Additionally, 22 Sony/ATV songs were recognized with awards at the event. These were with their Sony/ATV ASCAP-affiliated songwriters alongside:
