The Edge writes open letter over accusations of U2's alleged tax evasion

U2's guitarist, The Edge, has spoken out about accusations that suggest the band have been evading taxes and slammed the rumours as "libelous".

In an open letter to the Baltimore Sun newspaper, the musician explained that U2 have never avoided paying their dues and "will never be involved in tax evasion":

"For the record, U2 and the individual band members have a totally clean record with every jurisdiction to which they are required to pay tax and have never been and will never be involved in tax evasion,"

"U2 and its members have paid many, many millions of dollars in taxes to the United States Internal Revenue Service over the years."
