Following the release of their critically acclaimed a cappella album 'Rant' and a wealth of UK shows and festival dates, The Futureheads have announced that they’ll be releasing an acoustic version of ‘The Beginning of the Twist’ on15th October through Nul Records. Originally featured on ‘This is Not the World’  in 2008,‘The Beginning of the Twist’ is a firm favourite amongst fans and this Eastern European-tinged rendition has gone on to become one of highlights of their stunningly versatile and witty a cappella and acoustic show.

The first track from the set to be released that doesn’t feature on ‘Rant’, it most recently raised the canvas roof of the Festival Republic stage at this year’s Reading & Leeds Festival inspiring pogoing gypsy-punk moves from the crowd and is set to do the same at the band’s upcoming shows this month. 

The Futureheads are set to play an a cappella & acoustic headline show at London’s Shepherd’s Bush Empire on September 19th, where they will be supported by Mercury Prize nominees Sweet Billy Pilgrim. They also have a cappella dates in Belfast and Dublin and close their very own Split Festivalalongside the likes of Pulled Apart By Horses, Saint Etienne and PiL, fronted by British punk icon John Lydon. 

Following this legendary addition to Split Festival’s line-up, Barry Hyde had this to say:

Having recently released a remixed version of their album ‘In a Dim Light’, London-based trio Nedry have now had North Atlantic Oscillation put their own twist on ‘Float’. They’ve stripped away Nedry’s trademark fidgeting rhythms, built in a warming, tumbling flow of drum beats to create something typical of North Atlantic Oscillation: atmospheric and suitably beautiful.

Their pop lust is often combined with a razor sharp wit. On the song 'I Don’t Like You (‘Cos You Don’t Like The Pastels)', for instance, Richard muses: “I didn’t leave when you said you didn’t like Springsteen. I didn’t even flinch when you said you hated the Go-Betweens. But what you said about Baby Honey was truly unforgivable…” 

Hearing these songs and reference points feels like being granted instant access to the best fanclub on earth. A club filled with people you can have a laugh with rather than lofty popstars who want to keep you at arms length. Following the release of album ‘Fog Electric’ in April, Edinburgh-based duo North Atlantic Oscillation are preparing for their next single and a hometown show on August 23rd. Taken from 'Fog Electric', ‘Savage with Barometer' will be out on August 20thaccompanied by a video by Brendan McCarthy.

Shot in Edinburgh, the video explores one of the most simple of acts: crossing the road. Although visually it's a step away from 'Fog Electric's theme of the sea's devastating power, the constant stop-start motion of the main character’s journey and his frustration that builds alongside it is mirrored by the hypnotic wall of sound that dominates ‘Savage with Barometer’.

As a track, it grows and pulls back before ultimately rolling into a shimmering wave-like crescendo. Here, North Atlantic Oscillation have captured the beautiful and often cruel nature of the sea, encapsulating the album's theme. 

North Atlantic Oscillation are Sam Healy (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, programming) and Ben Martin (drums, synths, programming). They are joined live by Bill Walsh (synths, guitar, vocals) and Chris Howard (bass & synths).

Initially set to take place at XOYO, Cloud Nothings have announced that their forthcoming sold-out London show on August 21st has now moved to Corsica Studios following plans to refurbish the east London venue. Original tickets purchased for XOYO are still valid.

The Corsica Studios show may well be sold out, but Cloud Nothings will be returning to London for what promises to be another incredible live show on November 6th, fresh from the Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris. This time they’ll play the ruggedVillage Underground, a fitting venue for their snarling, riff-driven anthems.

With previous releases for labels such as In The Red, Woodsist, Castle Face, Captured Tracks and Sacred Bones under their belt, The Fresh & Onlys have already carved a name for themselves. Now they return with their fourth LP, the big, sprawling and woozily psychedelic ‘Long Slow Dance’ (or ‘L.S.D.’).  

The quartet—Tim Cohen, Shayde Sartin, Wymond Miles, and Kyle Gibson— got started in 2008 and look exactly like a biker gang composed of record store employees who could stomp your ass while shouting Kobaïan (that language ‘70s French prog band Magma made up) at you, if they felt like it. So, it’s cool if you feel a bit unnerved when first meeting these four shaggy San Franciscans, even if that meeting only occurs via their songs.

 There’s something very bad-ass about their music; it’s entirely assured and brazenly unique. You are free to think of them as part of a vibrant Bay Area scene (because they are) or try to link them to the nu-garage movement of several years ago (which is a stretch). 

Whichever contextual lens you use, it hardly matters. The band is so comfortable with mixing and matching seemingly disparate genre elements at this point that, as a listener, it’s easy to feel like a mouse batted about in a corner by a housecat. It is tasteful, of course, and it does this at the service of forceful songs—frequently witty and often lovely songs. That’s the real reason it’s difficult to stop playing this album once you start. 

So there you have it—The Fresh and Onlys, back to mess with your head and have you say “Thank you.”

Fresh & Onlys - Presence Of Mind by Souterrain Transmissions

‘Circles’ is the product of a long winter’s isolation in the Rocky Mountains, though the road to its fruition stretched over six months and several locations.  The groundwork for the album was laid at the band’s home in Blue River, Colorado in the early months of 2012, where all songs were written, and the preliminary tracks recorded.  For two weeks in early April, Moon Duo moved into a small apartment above Lucky Cat Recordings in San Francisco for an additional recording session with engineer Phil Manley (Trans Am, Life Coach). Like its predecessor, the album was mixed and tweaked at Kaiku Studios in Berlin. 

Inspiration for many of the songs themes, as well as the title ‘Circles’, came from Ralph Waldo Emerson's 1841 essay by the same name, on the symbol and nature of "the flying Perfect." From the opening lines: "The eye is the first circle; the horizon which it forms is the second; and throughout nature this primary figure is repeated without end." And so it goes. Rust never sleeps.

Formed in San Francisco in 2009 by Wooden Shijps guitarist Ripley Johnsonand Sanae Yamada, Moon Duo’s first two critically acclaimed EPs, 'Killing Time'(2009) and 'Escape' (2010), fused the futuristic pylon hum and transistor reverb of Suicide or Silver Apples with the heat-haze fuzz of American rock ‘n’ roll to create tracks of blistering, 12-cylinder space rock. 

Their debut album 'Mazes', recorded in San Francisco and mixed in Berlin during 2010 as the band prepared to move to the mountains of Colorado, explores a far broader, lighter, sound.  That’s most clear on the dreamy organ and skipping riff of the title track, which recalls the Velvet Underground, or the handclaps and swinging organ bloops over the potent shredding and guttural riff delivered by Johnson in When You Cut. Throughout, 'Mazes' is the sound of Moon Duo carving out their own identity, looking to the horizon, and moving forward. 

Late 2011 saw the release of the darker, mostly instrumental 'Horror Tour' EP around the band’s fall tour of Eastern Europe; Record Store Day 2012 brought a limited edition LP 'Mazes Remixed 'which featured remixes by the likes of Sonic Boom, Psychic Ills, and Purling Hiss.  Now Moon Duo are set to release'Circles', their second full-length LP with Souterrain Transmissions. The band will also set off on a worldwide tour in support of the album in October and November, the UK dates are below:

Moon Duo - Sleepwalker by Souterrain Transmissions

Set for release on September 10th, the album ‘Algiers’ will be released on City Slang in Europe and Anti in the US and is accompanied by a one off show atLondon’s HMV Forum on September 18th. 

Recorded in New Orleans, Joey Burns’ and John Convertino’s sixth album is arguably the most exciting and accessible CALEXICO record to date. It’s a fact emphasised by the band’s decision to name the album in tribute to the neighbourhood where they worked: Algiers.

 The feel of Algiers is recognisably classic CALEXICO, but their style has been revitalised and reborn through the experience of recording in the magical city of New Orleans. Their work has spoken of dusty deserts and the loners that inhabit them, mixing America’s country music heritage with that of a Latin persuasion. In other words, it isn’t obviously affiliated with the sounds that have made New Orleans one of the premiere tourist destinations in the US. The choice of New Orleans was largely down to long time collaborator/producer Craig Schumacher. “We were talking about wanting to go to Europe and record,” Burns says, “but we never get our stuff together in time to make plans that far in advance. So where do you go that is nearby and has a European feel? New Orleans.” 

You might think that after the 22 years since they first met, six studio albums and a suitcase of tour CDs, collaborations with the likes of Victoria Williams, Iron & Wine, Willie Nelson, Roger McGuinn and Nancy Sinatra, and soundtrack work to boot, there wasn’t much more they could achieve. But you’d be wrong. New Orleans clearly inspired them to make an album that sees them stretch out more effortlessly than ever before.

Two Wounded Birds are set to release ‘To Be Young’ next week, the first single to be taken from their brilliant self-titled debut album and you can now watch their stylish video for it online following its premiere on NME this morning.
 
Filmed in the beautiful 100 year-old Carlton Cinema in Westgate-on-Sea near the band’s hometown of Margate, the video - directed by Dom Bridges - boasts bold colours, slick lighting and projected cartoon images that soften the bright backdrop.
 
With the video’s location and style reflecting the track’s romantic and nostalgic elements, it reflects Two Wounded Birds’ vulnerable and delicate qualities whilst maintaining the rebellious nature that has become synonymous with the band’s style.
 
“We made the video in the Carlton Cinema in Westgate On Sea," explains guitarist Joe Stevens, "It’s one of the few places that uses analogue projection. The seats are velvet and the whole place has the feeling of another time.  The cartoons are also from a different time. One of them is a journey through space and all the planets have the faces of Gods on them, they look like marbles.

"In the video at one point you can see cows leaning out of the window of a space shuttle and dancing with each other. In another two poor kids in rags go to sleep and wake up in paradise together. Reality is something you don’t consider when you’re young, things like this make total sense and the world’s a better place for it.“
