Adam Lambert on fronting Queen: 'I don't try to compete with Freddie Mercury when I'm on stage'

Vocal powerhouse Adam Lambert is due to head out on tour with Queen next month and it was recently announced that the run of dates will also now travel to Australia.

Speaking to Byron Cooke for Music Geek about the newly confirmed Australian dates on his upcoming tour with iconic rock band Queen, Lambert admitted that he can't wait to head down under: "I'm so excited, and when they added Australia to our tour... it was like the icing on the cake."

"I think it'll throw together a slightly different fan base. I think it'll be good... it'll be refreshing for everybody. I'm really excited that I get to sing for die-hard Queen fans and I think that the guys like the idea that there's a lot of fans of my music that come to the table. It feels really, really good. There's a lot of joy."

When asked if he's daunted by stepping into the role Freddie Mercury used to play in the band, Lambert confessed that he knows he won't replace him and he's honoured to sing as Queen's frontman

"Of course there's always going to be some nay-sayers and purists... it's never going to be the same without Freddie. Freddie Mercury is a one of a kind icon, once in a lifetime voice - he's one of my heroes. I think he's absolutely brilliant. I don't go on stage thinking, 'Oh, I'm going to compete with that'."

He added: "That's not my intention at all. I get up there and try to pay my respects to him as a vocalist, to him as a songwriter... bring these songs to life and give the people who love these songs a great show. Any nay-sayers out there that are boo-hooing it, don't come! But you're going to miss out on a great show."
