Adam Lambert on sexuality: 'When I came onto the scene, there wasn't a blueprint'

'Ghost Town' hitmaker Adam Lambert called into 106.1 BLI earlier today and opened up about being an openly gay man in the entertainment industry.

He confessed that it was tough to be so open when he was on 'American Idol' because at the time there wasn't much of a public conversation about sexuality so, in a sense, he was really paving the way:

"I think when I started, there wasn't a lot out there in the mainstream. It was trial and error because there wasn't a blueprint for me so I was trying to very carefully express myself. There were bound to be missteps and people that didn't understand, but I think we're in a better place now. I think there's more diversity within it now, which is great."

"I was out of the closet at 18 so I always laugh when people say, 'oh, you came out after 'Idol'. I'm like, 'I was out...'. I've always been out. It's interesting because the irony is that... a lot of people didn't care and the media made a bigger deal out of it than a lot of people who were included! The media loved it."
