Adam Lambert will become a Glee cast member this autumn.

The news was revealed by the show's co-creator Ryan Murphy on Twitter, who said:

"I am thrilled to announce that the super talented Adam Lambert is joining the cast of Glee this fall."

The singer replied simply to the tweet: "I'm so excited!! ;)."

It is unclear, however, what part the vocal powerhouse will play in the popular TV programme, which has been running since 2009.

It is also not known if Lambert's place in the cast will be temporary or whether he will be a regular in the next series.

Fans seemingly lapped up this apparent marriage made in heaven, with one Twitter user saying:

"ADAM LAMBERT ON GLEE IM CRYING."

Glee beauty Lea Michele meanwhile commented on Twitter: "Omg so excited that @adamlambert is going to be on #Glee this season! I hope he's with me in NYC! #GleeSeason5."
