Adele is the first performer to be confirmed for Brit Awards 2016

British superstar Adele has been announced as the first performer for The Brit Awards 2016.

The singer-songwriter will return to the stage on February 24 for the ITV ceremony.

Brit Awards chairman, Max Lousada, commented: "You couldn't get a bigger name in music right now.

"Adele is having an exceptional moment and The Brits are delighted to be a part of her history, her present and future"

The 'Hello' hitmaker is currently enjoying the success of her record-breaking album '25', which topped the charts worldwide last month.

Adele has broken YouTube viewing figures and achieved a record for the most-watched US network concert special in a decade.

Nominations for the Brit Awards 2016 are due to be announced on January 14, with further acts to be confirmed soon as well.

Ant and Dec are set to return to host the Brits from the O2 Arena in London.
