Adele and Ed Sheeran most popular global recording artists of 2015

Adele has been named the most popular global recording artist of the last year.

The singer topped the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's annual rundown after selling over 15 million copies of her third album '25'.

The record was only released in November, but the album and its lead single 'Hello' topped charts worldwide.

IFPI chief executive Frances Moore commented: "Her album 25 has been the runaway global sensation of the year, breaking records across the world and reaching a vast audience of fans.

"All of the artists in our top 10 chart have achieved incredible success – and Adele’s achievement is simply phenomenal."

Ed Sheeran, who last year was crowned Spotify’s most streamed act of all time, is No.2 on the list.

Taylor Swift follows at No.3, with Justin Bieber and One Direction following.

The sixth most popular act last year was Coldplay, with Maroon 5, Sam Smith and Drake close by.

The rundown's top ten is completed by The Weeknd.
