Adele beats James to Official Albums Chart top spot

Adele continues to prove unbeatable as she extends her lead the Official Albums Chart once again this week.

After a strong start from Manchester band James, who lead the way with their new album earlier this week, Adele’s 25 has since managed to overtake them to log itself at 12th non-consecutive week at the summit. The feat means James are denied their first Number 1 album in 18 years.

James’ 14th studio collection Girl At The End Of The World has to settle for second place, and Justin Bieber’s Purpose slides back a place to Number 3.

This week’s Top 5 is completed by Jess Glynne’s I Cry When I Laugh (4) and a new entry from Iggy Pop. His 17th collection Post Pop Depression enters at Number 5, giving the rock star his first ever Top 10 album.

British electronic group Underworld are new at Number 10 with their first album in six years, Barbara Barbara We Face A Shining Future, Primal Scream land at 12 with their 11th record Chaosmosis, and Gwen Stefani enters at Number 14 with her third solo album This Is What The Truth Feels Like.

Further down the chart, Irish band Walking On Cars leap 12 places with Everything This Way, and three new albums finish inside the Top 40: Hans Zimmer & Junkie XL's Batman vs Superman - Dawn of Justice OST (31), rock band Room 94's Lost Youth (33), and 30 Goes Around The Sun by The Wonder Stuff (38).

Finally, the latest Now That's What I Call Music! compilation, Now 93, is officially the fastest selling album of 2016 so far. The album shifted 247,000 copies this week, beating the previous 2016 best hold by David Bowie's Blackstar, which sold 146,000 copies in its opening week after his untimely death in January.

Sales for Now 93 have outperformed the last two releases in the series. Now 92 sold 211,000 units in its first week back in 2015, with Now 91 shifting 224,000 over its first seven days. 264,000 bought Now 90.
