Adele's '21' named world's best selling album of last year

Adele's monolithic '21' has become the world's top selling record for the second year running.

The album, which was released back in 2011, sold 8.3 million units globally in 2012 as it saw its popularity continue to impress.

It was the world's best-selling album of 2011 too as it topped charts in the likes of the UK and the US.

The second best-selling of 2012 meanwhile was Taylor Swift's 'Red' with 5.2m units sold, whilst One Direction scored a double whammy with 'Up All Night' and 'Take Me Home' in at No.3 and No.4 respectively.

Lana Del Rey's 'Born To Die' meanwhile charted at No.5 on the list with sales of 4.4m.

Carly Rae Jepsen's monster hit 'Call Me Maybe' was the best-selling single of 2012 with 12.5m sales, whilst Gotye and Psy came in at No.2 and No.3.
