Jay-Z - music's first Billionaire?

There's rich and there's really really rich and American magazine Forbes has long been documenting the haves and the have mores in its famed Forbes 400 list.

First requirement: You can't just want to be a billionaire, you actually have to be one. Bill Gates is on it of course, so too are investor and philanthropist Warren Buffett, Apple’s Steve Jobs and Nike's Phil Knight.

This year Forbes has compiled a new list, the almost-billionaires, and there's only one music icon on it: Jay-Z.

In the US, Jay-Z has revolutionised the world of live shows this summer, filling enormous stadiums with Eminem, though hip-hop artists have traditionally not been able to fill such venues.

Last year's huge hit 'Empire State of Mind' popped up on last week's episode of 'Glee' (cha-ching for Jay-Z), his Roc Nation label is a huge success and the rights to his own back catalogue will revert to him in 2014. Then there's the revenue from his equally successful clothing line Rocawear plus a share of the NBA basketball team New Jersey Nets. Bubbling under is the beauty line Carol's Daughter (Jay-Z is one of several celebrity backers). And let's not forget his immensely profitable wife, Beyonce.

Other names seen as possibles to join Jay-Z on the Forbes 400 in the near future include Jerry Seinfeld, hugely successful film and TV producer Jerry Bruckenheimer, Tiger Woods, basketball legend Michael Jordan and Sean Parker, the founder of Napster played by Justin Timberlake in Facebook movie, 'The Social Network'. Parker owns 4% of Facebook and is worth a staggering $920 million. It should come as no surprise that the Forbes 400 newbie with the fastest-climbing bank balance is Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Last year Zuckerberg earned $2 billion, this year $6.9 billion.

America's got Perry's back!

America has Katy Perry’s back. Take that ‘Sesame Street!'

Katy Perry is having the last laugh, make that last laughs following the hoo-hah over the not even terribly risque dress she wore to film a ‘Sesame Street’ segment.

Last week executives announced the segment would not air on 'Sesame Street' following complaints from parents that her outfit was unsuitable viewing fodder for their children. The news has proved a veritable treasure trove for comedians galore and, ultimately it seems, for Perry herself.

On Saturday (September 25) night there she was working it on the season premiere of ‘Saturday Night Live’, in a hilarious sketch called ‘Bronx Beat with Betty and Jodi’. Perry played a children’s librarian called Maureen who arrived for the show “segment” wearing glasses (of course, all librarians wear glasses) and a super-tight Elmo T-shirt slashed low in the front. She noted to Betty and Jodi - who marvelled at her boobalicious “bazooms” - that “the library told me to wear some looser-fitting clothes”.

Laughs aside, Betty and Jodi (played by ex- ’SNL’ star Amy Poehler returning as guest host and Maya Rudolph) marvelled aloud at the insanity of Americans’ being unable to “look at the tops of boobs, so dumb, sooo dumb”.

‘The Simpsons’ also chose to come out in support of Perry, releasing a wickedly clever statement to Entertainment Weekly from Al Jean, one of the show’s executive producers. “In the wake of Elmo’s terrible betrayal, the Simpsons puppets wish to announce they stand felt-shoulder-to-shoulder with Katy Perry.” Perry filmed the Christmas-themed Simpsons episode, The Fight Before Christmas, before the 'Sesame Street' scandal broke.

Perry’s Simpsons episode will air in the US on December 5.

Catch her 'SNL' skit below:

Timberlake on 'The Social Network'

Justin Timberlake has admitted that being cast in the movie, 'The Social Network', terrified him.

The star, who plays businessman and entrepreneur Sean Parker in the upcoming drama based on the foundation of Facebook, said that he was very nervous about working with director David Fincher, but believed that the film would be a hit with today's generation.

Timberlake said, "That scared the s**t out of me. This movie’s dense. There’s a lot there. I do think everyone will take something different away from this movie. I think it really touches on the younger generations and that 'we want what we want and we want it really fast (mentality)'. We have the internet now, where we can do that. We talk fast, we walk fast, we think fast."

Timberlake revealed that his character had "a lot of layers" and that Fincher had helped him in "diagramming the arc and peeling back the layers" to Parker's complex personality.

'The Social Network' opens next week in the US on October 1, and in the UK on October 15.

The X Factor judge and popstar has made the revelations in her new autobiography, 'My Story'. In it, she insists that despite the press comparisons between both siblings, it did not affect the pair's relationship or "love and support" for each other.

"Less success was no success at all as far as my critics were concerned. As much as it broke my heart at times, it never made me any less proud and supportive of my sister, and I received the same love and support from her," she continued, adding: "The truth is I never felt as if I was competing with my sister. All pre-orders receive an immediate MP3 download of the breakout hit, "F**k You."

Released last month via Green's official YouTube channel, "F**k You" caused an instant viral commotion, drawing more than 2 million plays in its first five days online. The clip quickly became the #1 Most Viewed Video in the United Kingdom, beating out the latest uploads from the hugely popular singing competition series, The X Factor. What's more, "F**k You" was featured on close to 4,500 music blogs around the world, hitting #1 on The Hype Machine MP3 blog aggregator as well as topping an array of global video charts. The song's official companion video can now be viewed online at Cee Lo's official Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ceelogreen, while the original "F**k You" clip can be seen and heard at www.youtube.com/user/CeeLoGreen.

"F**k You" - co-written and produced by the multi-platinum certified production trio, The Smeezingtons, featuring Green's Elektra labelmate, Bruno Mars - is now bulleting its way up the top 40 on Billboard's "Hot 100" singles chart. The track is officially on sale at all digital retailers, as well as via www.ceelogreen.com, where it can be purchased individually or in a bundle with an exclusive Cee Lo Green "F**k You" t-shirt. An amended version of the single and video - entitled "Forget You" - is set to arrive later in the fall.

Along with its phenomenal popular success, "F**k You" has also proven a favorite with Green's fellow artists and celebrities, with a flurry of tweets directing users to the video coming from such luminaries as 50 Cent, Ashton Kutcher, Perez Hilton, Simon Pegg, RealNetworks founder Rob Glaser, and music industry icon Bob Lefsetz. In addition, 50 Cent was inspired to put together his own unauthorized remix of the track, which has also drawn a huge online audience.

As if all that weren't enough, "F**k You" has received ecstatic critical acclamation from coast to coast. "One of the greatest songs in the history of humankind," declared The Dallas Observer's "DC9 At Night" music blog, with Idolator.com hailing it as "a toe-tapping old school soul-filled track that is hands down the happiest ‘FU' we've ever heard." "As timeless, efficient, and repeatable as any number of golden oldies," declared Pitchfork, adding, "Like ‘Hey Ya' before it, ‘F**k You' gets by on a generation-spanning simplicity, and, coming from Cee Lo's mouth, the title phrase actually isn't illicit at all. It's beyond happy. Cathartic. It could be the new ‘Sesame Street' theme."

Cee Lo - whose "What Part Of Forever" is featured on Chop Shop/Atlantic's blockbuster "THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE - ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK" - heralded "THE LADY KILLER" earlier this summer with "Georgia," an emotional tribute to his beloved home state. Both Georgia" and an additional album track, entitled "ChamPain," are available now as free downloads to all fans joining the Cee Lo Green Mailing List at his official web home, www.ceelogreen.com.

Furthermore, explicit and amended videos for the album's stunning cover version of Band of Horses' "No One's Gonna Love You" - produced by Paul Epworth (Florence & The Machine, Bloc Party, The Big Pink) - can currently be seen and heard at www.youtube.com/ceelogreen. * * * * * Known far and wide as one half of Grammy Award-winning superstar duo Gnarls Barkley, Cee Lo Green is a true 21st Century renaissance man. Having first made his bones as a member of southern hip-hop pioneers, Goodie Mob, Green soon struck out on his own with 2002's "CEE LO GREEN AND HIS PERFECT IMPERFECTIONS," highlighted by the Timbaland-produced hit single, "Closet Freak." The acclaimed "CEE LO GREEN...IS THE SOUL MACHINE" followed two years later, again featuring a Timbaland-produced hit single in "I'll Be Around."

As if that weren't enough, Cee Lo also became one of R&B/hip-hop's most in-demand collaborators, penning and producing tracks for such like-minded artists as Jennifer Hudson, Brandy, Amerie, and Solange. His greatest success as songwriter/producer came in 2005 with the RIAA platinum-certified, international #1, "Don't Cha," by Pussycat Dolls featuring Busta Rhymes.

In 2006, Green teamed with producer/DJ Danger Mouse as Gnarls Barkley and quickly made history with the international #1 smash, "Crazy" (later named as "Song of the Decade" by Rolling Stone). The duo's kaleidoscopic debut, "ST. ELSEWHERE," proved a critical triumph and chart-topping blockbuster, ultimately earning RIAA platinum certification in the US for sales exceeding 1 million. At 2007's 49th Annual Grammy Awards, Gnarls received seven nominations and snagged two of the event's most coveted trophies - "Best Alternative Music Album" and "Best Urban Alternative Performance." "THE ODD COUPLE" followed in 2008, earning further praise along with an additional trio of Grammy nods.

"THE LADY KILLER" - Green's first solo work in more than six years - sees the endlessly inventive singer/writer/rapper/producer continuing to push hip-hop and soul's creative envelope, this time working with a star-studded cast of producers that includes Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse), Jack Splash (Alicia Keys, Missy Elliot, Jamie Foxx), and Fraser T. Smith (Nelly Furtado, James Morrison, Ellie Goulding).

Mute To Go Independent Again Through New Agreement Between EMI And Daniel Miller

LONDON, 24 September 2010 — EMI Music and Mute founder Daniel Miller have reached a preliminary agreement that will see EMI support Miller in the establishment of his second record label, and the continuation of the Mute brand as an independent recorded music business.

Since he founded Mute in 1978, Miller has signed and developed some of the world’s most innovative and influential recording artists including Depeche Mode, Moby, Goldfrapp, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Erasure and Richard Hawley. He sold Mute to EMI in 2002 and has continued to lead the label since then.

Miller’s new label will operate under the trademark Mute which it is licensing from EMI. It will tap into EMI’s Label Services unit for sales, distribution, synch & licensing and merchandising in the US, UK, Canada and Ireland, and a network of independent record distributors elsewhere. The label will be controlled by Miller, with EMI taking a minority equity interest in the company. Miller will also take a consultancy role with EMI Music as part of the new agreement.

To help fund the label, EMI is licensing to Miller part of the Mute back catalogue. It is also providing Miller with operational support in areas such as royalty administration and business affairs.

Mute artists Depeche Mode, Goldfrapp, Richard Hawley, Kraftwerk and White Rabbits remain signed to and marketed worldwide by EMI Music, with Miller continuing to work with them in his A&R consultancy role with EMI. The remainder of the Mute roster will move over to Miller’s new independent label including Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Grinderman, Yeasayer, Erasure, Andy Bell, Liars, Polly Scattergood and A Place To Bury Strangers.

In the UK, the new Mute label will be housed with Miller’s existing music publishing and management business in Albion Place, West London, and in the US in a new location in New York.

It is proposed that the majority of Mute’s 18-strong staff in the UK and USA will move over from EMI to the new Miller-controlled company, while a number of UK-based Mute marketing staff are expected to remain with EMI and continue to work with EMI-signed Mute artists. EMI has today begun a consultation process on these new staffing proposals with all of its Mute employees.

David Kassler, EMI Music CEO, Europe & Rest of World, said: “We’re delighted to have reached this agreement with Daniel, who is a beacon for the artist community and one of the great label entrepreneurs. This new partnership will allow him to build a new independent label whilst enabling us to continue to work with him in a productive and creative way.”

Daniel Miller said: “I am pleased that as a result of this arrangement with EMI, Mute can prosper as a vibrant member of the independent sector, while retaining a strong and constructive link with EMI in the development of our catalogue, brand and roster.”
