Ed Sheeran denies 5 Seconds Of Summer this week’s Number 1 album

Ed Sheeran has held onto the No.1 spot on the Official Albums Chart, overhauling 5 Seconds Of Summer who claimed an initial lead on Wednesday’s midweeks. 5 Seconds of Summer have just announced a European tour for next year.

Ed’s second studio album 'X', which is pronounced as ‘multiply’, last week became the UK’s fastest selling album of 2014 so far, selling 182,000 copies during its opening week. It has since gone on to sell an additional 93,000 in the last seven days, bringing its tally to 275,000. 'X' is now the UK’s fourth biggest selling album of 2014 so far behind Ellie Goulding’s 'Halcyo'n (No.3), Paolo Nutini’s 'Caustic Love' (No.2) and Coldplay’s 'Ghost Stories' (No.1).

Sheeran told OfficialCharts.com: "Just heard the news that my album is at No.1 again this week! And to hear that every track from it is doing so well on streaming is great too. Thank you to everyone that's been enjoying it, however you're doing so."

Aussie four-piece 5 Seconds of Summer - Luke Hemmings (vocals / guitar), Michael Clifford (guitar), Calum Hood (vocals) and Ashton Irwin (drums) – will still be celebrating tonight though as they claim the highest new entry on this week’s Official Albums Chart. The group’s debut offering, which includes their Top 5 hits 'Don’t Stop' and 'She Looks So Perfect', is new in at No.2 today.

Following his performance at last weekend’s Glastonbury festival, 21-year-old singer/songwriter George Ezra enters at No.3 today with his debut album, 'Wanted On Voyage', while the Glastonbury effect is also felt by country queen Dolly Parton. Following her much talked about Pyramid Stage performance last Sunday, Parton’s latest album, 'Blue Smoke', climbs three places to No.4 today to bag her a personal best – Parton’s highest charting UK album to date, beating her 2007 greatest hits collection, 'The Very Best Of', which peaked at No.8.

Sam Smith’s former chart topper, 'In The Lonely Hour' (No.5), completes this week’s Top 5.

Singer/songwriter David Gray is new in at No.10 with his tenth album, 'Mutineers', while folk group Bellowhead enter two places behind him with their fifth album, 'Revival' (No.12).

Following the fifth anniversary of his death, Michael Jackson’s 'Bad' has re-entered the Top 40 as fans pay tribute to the late King Of Pop. The 1987 album, which is the ninth biggest seller of all time, is at No.15 today.

Meanwhile, John Barrowman scores his fifth Top 40 album with his latest collection, 'You Raise Me Up' (No.16), and US rapper Trey Songz debuts one place behind him with his sixth album, 'Trigga' (No.17).

After their headline set at last weekend’s Glastonbury festival, Metallica’s 1991 self-titled album (AKA 'The Black Album') climbs 23 places to re-enter the UK Top 40 at No.26, while Settle, by fellow Glastonbury stars Disclosure, is up 92 places to No.27 today.

And finally, Monty Python’s 'Sings (Again)' completes this week’s Top 40 new entries. The expanded edition of the comedy troupe’s 1989 album enters at No.35.
