Oasis fans have mixed feelings about John Lewis Christmas ad song

John Lewis' Christmas commercial has been unveiled, and Oasis fans took to Twitter to express mixed emotions about the cover that the retailer has chosen this year.

The Oasis track in dispute is 'Half The World Away', and was originally a B-side to 'Whatever'. The track is well-known as the theme tune to the popular BBC sitcom, 'The Royle Family'.

Reactions are mixed, with some loving the cover, and others complaining that if John Lewis wanted to use the track, they should have used the original. Others just wish it hadn't featured Oasis at all.

One Twitter user wrote: "Turned off the John Lewis advert after just five seconds. How could they ruin an Oasis song?”

Another tweeted: “Okay John Lewis, stop this madness right now. You’ve already butchered The Smiths and The Cure in the name of Christmas. Now Oasis. Argh!”

Others were more positive: "Ooh the new John Lewis ad is out for Christmas ... I can even forgive them for covering an Oasis tune ... lovely xxx"

Titled 'Man on the Moon', the ad tells the story of Lily, a girl who spends her time staring through a telescope looking at the moon. In the build-up to Christmas, she spots a lonely old man sitting on the moon, and tries to get in touch by sending letters through a bow and arrow… but to little success. When the big day finally arrives, Lily manages to send up a gift by balloon – a telescope so he can look down and say hello.

The campaign is in partnership with the Age UK charity to raise awareness for old, lonely people this Christmas.

In 2014, Tom Odell covered the Beatles’ 'Real Love' to an advert that featured penguins. Odell's track reached No. 7 in the charts.

In both 2012 and 2013, the John Lewis song made it to No. 1 with Gabrielle Aplin’s version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'The Power of Love' and Lily Allen’s version of Keane's 'Somewhere Only We Know'.

The current advert cost £1 million to produce, with a further £6 million being plowed into promotion on television and online.

John Lewis have already begun merchandising the campaign, selling cups, pajamas and telescopes. Some of the proceeds will go towards Age UK.

The cover version is sung by 19-year-old Norwegian, Aurora, who has confessed to preparing for Christmas as early as March, nine months beforehand.

Within a day of being released, the John Lewis Christmas advert has reached over 6 million views online.
