New York-based group The Scissor Sisters say that they are surprised by the success they've achieved, as they believed they were "too weird and too gay" for mainstream popularity.

Singer Ana Matronic admitted, "I never thought the Scissor Sisters would make it outside of New York City, let alone outside of America. I thought we were just too weird and too gay for public consumption."

Matronic also said that the death of her father from an AIDS-related illness encouraged her to discover the gay scene in New York and San Fransisco.

She admitted, "It was a subconscious thing. I didn't say 'My dad just died and he was gay so I'm going to immerse myself in gay culture to understand him'. It was a lot more organic than that."

The Scissor Sisters are set to release their latest single, 'Any Which Way', on September 20.
