Laurie Anderson plays New York's Times Square concert for dogs

Laurie Anderson played a concert for dogs to attend in New York's Times Square on Monday (January 4).

The late Lou Reed's partner played in -9C at 11.45pm. Wearing jogging bottoms and a parka, she picked up her violin and the music she played was amplified at a low frequency with the dogs' enjoyment in mind.

According to The Guardian, 'The Heart of a Dog' concert immediately gained a reaction from concert goer, Phoebe, a border collie - Australian shepherd mix who works as a therapy dog, as she barked loudly.

Other dogs such as Sophie, a long-haired chihuahua, braved the -18C wind chill by staying in an insulated bag.

The performance artist encouraged audience anticipation towards the end of her show by asking those with little dogs to get them to bark, though only if the dogs wanted to.

Speaking after the concert, she said:

"Oh, it was lovely, there was so many types of dogs, I really hadn’t imagined that many would show up. I was really impressed.”

Anderson has been performing music and creating art since the 1970s. Her first feature-length film, 'The Heart of a Dog', was released in 2015 and is shortlisted for the best documentary Oscar. The film focuses in part on the life and times of her deceased rat terrier, Lolabelle. A three-minute adaptation will play on billboards in Times Square for three minutes every night, from 11.57pm, during January.
