The Cars recording again after 23 years

Surviving members of new wave band The Cars are recording new material for the first time in 23 years and are also considering a new tour.

The US power-pop band, whose wealth of hits include ‘Just What I Needed’ and ‘You Might Think’, reformed earlier this year and Billboard reports that they have already recorded a number of songs at a New York studio.

The news has been confirmed after speculation was sparked by Facebook photos of all the members (excluding bassist Benjamin Orr who died in 2000) in the studio as well as a clip of a new song, titled ‘Blue Tip’, appearing on The Cars’ Facebook page.

After the band split in 1988, singer Ric Ocasek went on to become a successful producer, working with bands like No Doubt and Weezer. A spin-off project, the New Cars, was attempted without Ocasek in 2005, with replacement singer Todd Rundgren, but it failed to get off the ground.
