X Factor's Honey G on keeping her sexuality a secret: "I was worried about people being homophobic"

Former X Factor contestant Honey G, whose real name is Anna Gilford, has been back in the spotlight again after revealing to The Sun that she is gay.

The 36-year-old former IT recruitment consultant, who many viewers accused of simply being a comedy act and was slammed for being racist on the ITV talent show last year, has opened up to a sympathetic Lorraine in a new interview with the morning host, revealing the real reason why she kept her sexuality a secret.

She explained: “I feel now is the right time to let everyone know that I’m gay.”

“During The X Factor there was always speculation and I was always asked about my sexuality by press in interviews. I just wasn’t ready at the time to come out to the world. I was quite shy and guarded.

“I was worried about a backlash, and the haters. The last thing I wanted was homophobic haters. I was very worried about people being homophobic.

“Some people don’t accept gay people the way they accept straight people. It wasn’t the time in The X Factor. Now is the right time.”

Honey G's new single, ‘Hit You With The Honey G, is out now. Watch the video below:
