List of winners from this year's more politically charged MTV Video Music AwardsIn comparison to previous years, last night's (August 27) MTV Video Music Awards were more politically charged. Kendrick Lamar kicked off the Los Angeles ceremony with a mini-medley of his songs. He led the evening with eight nominations, followed by Katy Perry and The Weeknd, who both had five. Perry, who was also the night's host, joked about the state of the world, saying: "Even in the apocalypse we deserve the best soundtrack," as she introduced Paris Jackson - the late Michael Jackson's daughter - to present the award for Best Pop Video. Jackson made a statement before announcing the winner: "Let's leave here tonight remembering that we must show these Nazi, white supremacist jerks in Charlottesville and all over the country that as a nation with 'liberty' as our slogan, we have zero tolerance for their violence, their hatred and their discrimination. "We must resist." Jackson's remarks kicked off the political tone of the whole evening. Another highlight of the music ceremony was P!nk winning the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The singer performed a mix of some of her biggest hits, along with her new single "What About Us". During her acceptance speech, the singer-songwriter revealed that her six-year-old daughter felt unattractive because she believed she looked like a boy. The singer said she has been using that as a teachable time to discuss the success behind many androgynous artists, including herself. She said: "Baby girl, we don't change, we take the gravel in the shell and we make a pearl. "And we help other people to change so that they can see more kinds of beauty. "To all the artists here, I am so inspired by all of you. Thank you for being your true selves." Another memorable moment of the night was Jared Leto's tribute to Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington, who committed suicide earlier this year in July.
