The Cranberries singer Dolores O'Riordan has died aged 46

The frontwoman of The Cranberries, Dolores O'Riordan, has suddenly died at the age of 46.

The Irish rock musician, originally from Limerick, shot to fame with her band in 1993 with their debut album, "Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?". They had international success in the 90s with their hit singles "Linger" and "Zombie," going on to sell over 40 million records worldwide.

A statement has been issued by a spokesperson saying: "The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session.

"No further details are available at this time.

"Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

Irish rockers Kodaline have been among the first to pay tribute to the singer on social media, saying:

"Absolutely shocked to hear about the passing of Dolores O'Riordan! @The_Cranberries gave us our first big support when we toured with them around France years ago! Thoughts are with her family and friends"

Boy George tweeted: "Dolores O'Riordan has left us. This is very sad news. Loved The Cranberries. R.I.P."
