Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner on BRIT Awards speech: 'I was presenting people with an option'

Alex Turner, frontman for the Arctic Monkeys, has revealed that his recent acceptance speech at the 2014 BRITs wasn't a drunken ramble and was, instead, a heartfelt expression of opinion.

Speaking to the NME about the speech, which he made after his band won the Best British Album prize and became a talking point after the ceremony, Turner explained that he wanted to tell the world that rock and roll is still very much alive:

"It was just about presenting an option that people may or may not know exists. It occurred to me that in that room, or certainly watching it on TV, were people who'd never heard the term 'rock 'n' roll'... and the idea that you can start a band with your mates and eventually go on to move people or whatever you wanna call it."

"Using rock 'n' roll as the most direct way of illustrating that was kinda what I was trying to do - and also to try and be a bit entertaining at the same time."

The star also told the Mail On Sunday that he was nervous to talk in front of so many people: "In public I’m a quiet guy, so doing anything in front of lots of people always makes me nervous. I’m known for my music, not how well I deliver a speech.”
